Villa Country Askifou

The Villa Country Askifou is a comfortable holiday home in a small village by the edge of the Askifou high plateau, approx. 745 meters above sea level.

With this villa, the landlord fulfilled a dream of his: An old building made from thick walls of boulders in the traditional style, was restored lovingly and equipped with modern conveniences.

It has an open fireplace, satellite color TV, central heating and a swimming pool.

The Askifou High Plateau is part of the eastern Lefka Ori, the "White Mountains", in the western part of the island of ▶ Crete.

The word comes from the Turkish language and means "cup" which is true: The plateau is framed by mountains, and it's bottom is flat like the one of a cup.

The peaceful and fertile landscape is perfect for relaxing and enjoying extensive strolls.

The villa is located at Goni which is a slip of a village by the high plateau's south border, on a small hill.

Past the neighbouring village of Petres, a road connects Vrisses on the north coast to Hora Sfakion on the south coast.

So there are excellent connections to both the cities of ▶ Hania (55 kms) and ▶ Rethymnon (58 kms) in the North, as well as to the dream beaches in the South.

Iraklion airport is 142 kms away, Hania airport 59 kms.

With respect to the winding character of Cretan roads, transfer times from and to the airports must not be underestimated.

A rental car is essential for mobility during your vacation. Many of our regular guests have been booking their rental vehicles for several years at the ▶ Eurocars car rental in Rethymnon, which also serves the two airports.

The three-storied house nestles against the slope in terraces.

In the yard there is a swimming pool and a barbecue facility, sunbeds and umbrellas are also available.

The terrace is partly roofed with an overgrown pergola from which one can pick bunches of grapes in autumn.

The living-area consists from several rooms and is located on the ground floor.

It has a satellite TV set and a fireplace, firewood is on hand. The house also has a central heating system.

An air conditioning system is not necessary as the altitude level and the thick walls provide a pleasant temperature even during high summer.

On the two upper floors there are 5 bedrooms which have double beds.

Traditional furniture are combined with modern elements in a skilful way, where the modern things of course are of "old" style as well.

There are two bathrooms one of which has a whirlpool, and a separate WC.

The modern facilities again were integrated in the traditional style successfully.

The top floor has a separate entrance, an own fireplace and a balcony, and the connecting door to the lower stories can be locked.

So on demand the flat can be used as an independent dwelling unit for up to 4 persons (one double bed, one double convertible sofa).

Families or small groups of up to 6 persons who do not need the top floor, can hire the two lower floors at reduced rates (except high season).

Room cleaning as well as change of sheets and towels twice per week.

The kitchen fits in the house's style.

There is a fully functioning brickwork oven, but also a modern gas-hob with a separate electric hot-plate, and of course a refrigerator.

The equipment with pots and pans, plates and dishes, cutlery and glassware is complete, and besides a washing machine there is also a dishwasher.

The nearest supermarket is in the neighbouring village in a distance of just under 3 kms which is connected by a paved road.

The nearest gas station is also located there, furthermore tavernas and kafenions.

A wider ranging supply with supermarkets, tavernas and shops of many kind can be found at Vrisses (22 kms) and ▶ Georgioupolis on the north coast (29 kms).

For bigger shoppings, a trip to one of the nearest LIDL markets by the north coast motor highway at ▶ Hania (53 kms) or ▶ Rethymnon (56 kms) will pay as they offer plenty of budget imported foodstuffs.

Some watersport offers such as wetbikes, parachutes and windsurfing can be found on the beach of ▶ Georgioupolis (29 kms).

A more complete supply is available along the beaches of the bigger hotels which line up from Georgioupolis in the eastward direction.

Bars, discotheques and a colourful nightlife can also be found in Georgioupolis, and all-year in the picturesque Venetian old towns of ▶ Hania (55 kms) and ▶ Rethymnon (58 kms).
